Rome may be the capital of Christianity, but it is also home to Europe's oldest and most dynamic Jewish community. That history has become more accessible than ever, thanks to a massive face-lift of the once walled Jewish ghetto, including refurbished
buildings, art galleries and kosher restaurants.
The centerpiece of the ghetto is Rome's Great Synagogue, now open to the public. Because of security concerns, tourists cannot visit without an authorized guide.
