Jun. 23--MYRTLE BEACH -- Viewing rosters in the S.C. Baseball Coaches' All-Star Game program, the South 2A/3A team appeared to have an edge in any arms race needed this weekend at Coastal Federal Field.
Grand Strand-area senior aces Ben Henry (Loris), Alex Downing (Carolina Forest), Tyler Vick (Waccamaw) and Josh McElwee (Andrews) were listed as South 2A/3A players, all whom baffled and overwhelmed area batters.
But that depth is deceiving.
On Thursday, Henry removed himself from the weekend competition after signing with the Texas Rangers, who selected him in Major League Baseball's first-year player draft earlier this month. And Downing said he is still a few weeks from being able to pitch after sustaining a stress fracture in his right arm late in the regular season.
The absence of Downing and Henry hurt the South team in its 7-1 loss to the North 2A/3A team Friday, which advanced to play the North 1A/4A team for the All-Star title at 4 p.m. today.
"Without those pitchers it makes a big difference," South 2A/3A coach Chad Sarvis said. "But we didn't hit the ball either.
