Jun. 23--By 2030, there will be more residents along the Waccamaw Neck than in the city of Georgetown, according to projections from the Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments.
The population along the Waccamaw Neck, which includes Murrells Inlet, Pawleys Island and the Litchfield community, is expected to increase from about 18,229 to 29,215 residents.
The population in the city of Georgetown is expected to reach 23,830 residents by 2030, according to the projections.
Over the past two months, Georgetown County Planning officials and Waccamaw Neck residents have worked on a land use proposal to help meet the future needs of the community as part of the county's 10-year comprehensive plan.
"We've been open to any concepts that allow open space," said Lee Hewitt, the committee chairman.
"I guess what we don't want to see is a gridlock of our road system," he said, "Maybe implementing access management. That is where you have shared road cuts and interconnectivity. Interconnecting business cuts down on the amount of traffic on U.S. 17." Under the proposal there will be no unzoned areas in the Waccamaw Neck.
