HWA gets Gullwing work
Mercedes-Benz will tap elite AMG performance spinoff HWA to build the SL Gullwing ("Super Studs Spied,'' AW, Oct. 23, 2006). The project, which began in 2004 as the McLaren-Mercedes P8, now will be overseen by HWA, the company created by AMG founder Hans Werner Aufrecht to manage Mercedes' DTM racing program.
The AMG-badged car is expected to go into production by 2009 or 2010, powered by a 6.3-liter, 750-hp, twin-turbocharged V8. Watch for a concept version at the Geneva show next March.
Saleen's next stand
Less than a month after we reported that Steve Saleen had resigned from the company that bears his name (News, May 28) comes word that Saleen has joined ZX Automobile Company of North America as its CEO. ZXNA is a subsidiary of Chamco (China America Cooperative Automotive), a New Jersey-based company that already has announced plans to import Chinese vehicles to North America.
This fall, ZXNA will import a pickup truck and a sport/utility vehicle for sale in the Mexican market. By 2009, ZXNA hopes to have an assembly plant in Baja, Mexico, where it will build vehicles for the United States. Plans call for importing 30,000 vehicles a year to the States.
