The federal government recently announced that it has put off implementing the Real ID Act until December 2009 (originally scheduled for spring 2008), and now there are at least 10 states calling for its repeal. This could be good for motorists, who have been too silent about the use of driver's licenses for this purpose.
You may have your own opinion about the idea of a national ID. Some people-including the majority of Congress that passed the Real ID Act and the president who signed it in 2005-clearly think we need it for national security and immigration control. Others fear potential intrusions on civil rights, particularly privacy, especially now that the Department of Homeland Security says it wants to privatize the record-keeping function by contracting with a commercial firm to which states would report data on their citizens.
A state does have the option not to use driver's licenses. If so, however, citizens of that state won't be allowed to use the license as identification for federal functions. For example, you couldn't show a license from that state to board an ...
