Jun. 20--Santa Clara city officials approved a controversial housing project on the city's last 17 acres of farmland early this morning, ending a five-year battle over the fate of the prime real estate -- as big as 13 football fields -- near several highways and Westfield Valley Fair mall.
The council voted 6 to 0 -- with Councilwoman Jamie McLeod abstaining -- to rezone the land from agriculture to housing. That will allow Palo Alto-based SummerHill Homes to buy 11 acres of the state-owned land to build 110 single-family homes.
