A brush fire that burned for much of the afternoon is under control in Gates County, officials say.

The fire, which burned along Highway 13, involved 350 to 400 acres and prompted the evacuation of approximately dozen homes along Gatlington Road, said Sheriff Ed Webb.

"It was due to the wind shift that we decided to evacuate the homes," he said.

The sheriff said the effort took four plow tractors, a number of aircraft and firefighters from neighboring counties. Smoke will linger in the area for…
