For car-crazed Detroiters, Father's Day has two traditional alternatives: NASCAR at MIS or the EyesOn Design car show. NASCAR dads would never miss the race, but those of any other automotive persuasion will find EyesOn Design is the hot ticket. This year's focus on "Aerodynamics and Streamlining-By Design'' and several top attractions, including two Chaparral race cars (2F and 2H) on loan from the Chaparral Museum in Midland, Texas ("Road Running in the Land of the High Sky,'' AW, May 10, 2004), should make the June 17 event one of the best "Eyes'' in years.
Now reestablished at its proper home, the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan, after a few years of touring around the automotive design headquarters in the area, the show resembles a concours d'elegance, but it's really a celebration of design. It has tons of support from the local automotive community, which includes not only General Motors this year but also Toyota's Calty Design Research.
A benefit for the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology, EyesOn Design is chaired this year by Chris Theodore, vice chairman of ASC and a past vice president of both Chrysler and Ford Motor Company, credited with playing a key role in the development of the Ford GT, the Chrysler PT Cruiser and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
EyesOn Design includes an art show with nonautomotive art and a display of models.
