My Irish eyes are not smiling without Pat Flaherty included on your all-time Indy 500 grid (May 28). Wearing a green shamrock on his white helmet, he had a magical month of May in 1956, taking the pole at record speed and winning the race in record time (leading the second 100 laps uncontested) and-oh, by the way-giving the Watson Roadster its first win on its maiden voyage. Flaherty missed the next two 500s because of an injured arm but returned in 1959 to lead 11 laps and then retired from Indy.

I used to listen to my dad talk about his friend Merle whose brothers raced at Indy. I didn't believe him until 1982, when those guys invited us into Gasoline Alley, and I got to meet them: Gary and Tony Bettenhausen Jr. If you include their father, Melvin (Tony) Bettenhausen, the three of them raced 46 times at Indy.
