In The {Strangest} Song--One Father's Quest to Help His Daughter Find Her Voice, author Teri Sforza chronicles the struggles of Howard and Sylvia Lenhoff to understand the connection between musical ability and Williams Syndrome, a disability that their daughter, Gloria, was born with. Gloria Lenhoff, born in 1955, was a premature baby, although doctors assured the new parents that she was healthy and normal. But the baby was unusually cranky, cried relentlessly, was unable to keep food down and losing weight. Other symptoms surfaced: heart murmur, frozen elbow, missed growth milestones, and a severe sensitivity to sound, especially loud noises.
Howard, a research biochemist, and Sylvia, with a master's degree in history from Harvard, took turns during the night, pacing the floor with Gloria to calm her. Then one day, Howard picked up his guitar and began tuning it while Gloria stood mesmerized at her father's knee.
