The patterns of economic and social development associated with European industrialization in the last several centuries have been primary topics of comment virtually since they occurred. The career of Sidney Pollard, spanning the second half of this century, has been focused on these topics, and this volume, presented to him on his retirement from teaching in 1990, shares this emphasis.
