Driving down memory lane

Thank you. What a pleasant surprise to get an issue devoted to collector cars (May 21 cover story). The hot new cars are great, but it's wonderful to walk down memory lane every now and then. I'm glad to see you included the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum in your "Best Car Museums'' list. It is truly a national treasure and contains some of the most beautiful cars in the world. (It is probably no surprise that I'm a fan of the Escape Roads section.)

No goofy headgear

The photograph on page 14 of your May 21 issue shows a 1938 BMW 328 with a helmeted driver. The comment about the photograph includes "And no, that's not our writer in the goofy headgear.'' The headgear is not goofy. Your writer is uninformed. The headgear is a leather driving helmet with a forehead flap. The helmet may be used with goggles. The top of the goggles fit onto the flap so that the forehead is protected against the elements. My wife has a European driving helmet with a flap and uses it when touring in our Morgan Roadster.
