Chemical Week

The CW75 rose by less than 1% for the week ending May 16, in line with broader market indexes. Basic chemical shares increased by 3% because demand has begun to pick up, and selling prices for certain products are increasing, producers say. Diversified chemical shares were flat, and specialty chemical stocks slipped 1.1%.

Shanghai Petrochemical topped the leaders' list on market speculation that its parent company Sinopec planned a buyout, and to take the unit private. The stock price has since fallen, however, because Sinopec says it does not have current plans to take the unit private. Lyondell Chemical's shares also rose, on news of a possible takeover. Russian industrialist Leonard Blavatnik, who controls investment firm Access Industries, has purchased the right to buy an 8.3% stake in Lyondell. Access is interested in starting discussions to acquire all of Lyondell, Blavatnik says (CW, May 15, p. 8).
