Haleh Esfandiari, 67, is director of the Middle East Program at the Smithsonian Institution's Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. She holds both American and Iranian citizenship. Late last year, she went to Iran to visit her 93-year-old mother. As she was on her way to the airport to return to Washington, "her taxi was stopped by three men with knives who threatened to kill her.
