May 24--PIEDMONT -- Piedmont Police Chief David Hardin has been demoted to the rank of lieutenant because of recent complaints about him made by another city employee, City Manager Michael Vaughn said Wednesday.

Specifics were not released, but Vaughn said he offered Hardin the position of lieutenant after an internal investigation that lasted more than a week. Hardin had been on paid leave since May 10.

Vaughn said an acting chief would be brought in "to help the transition" until a new permanent chief could be hired.

Police Lt. Sterling Markel has been acting as chief during Hardin's leave.
