Facing a capacity crisis, New York Container Terminal President James Devine says the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey should purchase a 500-acre property on Staten Island for maritime activity.
The property, owned by GATX, was formerly used for tank farms. But it''s now empty, and it likely will be used for other purposes such as condominium development if the port does acquire the land, he said.
The port''s container terminals, meantime, will reach maximum capacity in 12 to 18 months, he said.
