Helio Castroneves was trying to win the Indianapolis 500 pole; Dario Franchitti was trying to keep it. Then it was Tony Kanaan's turn to do both.
Such was the action May 12 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where one of the most intriguing pole days in years played out on a glorious weekend before an appreciative crowd.
Castroneves ended up with the top starting spot for the May 27 race, but getting there involved a wild set of circumstances.
Shortly before 1 p.m., Franchitti turned a four-lap average of 225.191 mph, and it surprised many in Gasoline Alley that he ended up No. 1 through the early hours.
