Readers of Gurcharan Das's March 19 column on India's budget were critical of the Indian Finance minister. One wrote, "He's ignored the interests of the common man." Said another, "unless the problems of the poor are addressed, his party won't be in power come the next election."
India's Latest Budget
In reference to your March 19 column "A Tale of Two Numbers" by Gurcharan Das, there is merit in the Indian opposition's criticism that Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has, in the new budget, ignored the interests of the common man, the bread-and-butter concerns of ordinary citizens. It is ironic that no substantial provisions have been made to control the price rises. Chidambaram needs to realize that a growth rate of 9 percent has no significance if it does not ensure a better standard of living for the masses. ...
