May 18--EASTPORT -- The Maine Senate on Thursday approved the transfer of the Maine Community College System's Marine Technology Center -- known locally as the Boat School -- to the city of Eastport.
Husson College of Bangor plans to begin running the boat-building program at the Eastport school later this year.
Sen. Kevin Raye, R-Perry, called the Senate's action "good news" for the Boat School. "I believe it has one more vote in the House and then on to the governor," he said of the bill.
The state expects to transfer ownership of the property from the Washington County Community College in Calais to Eastport on July 1.
In the meantime, Eastport City Manager George "Bud" Finch has been busy behind the scenes getting the facility ready for Husson, which is expected to introduce its freshman boat-building program beginning in the fall.
"Husson College has come forward as the white knight to partner with the city and the Boat School supporters, known locally as Friends of the Boat School, and will begin a transition of programs this September by bringing in a new freshman class," Finch said.
