ON THE NIGHT OF SEPTEMBER 28, 2004, the most prominent lesbian activist in Sierra Leone was working alone at the offices of the Sierra Leone Lesbian and Gay Association in Freetown. Fanny Ann Eddy, the group's founder, had addressed the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in Geneva only months before, calling for the commission to "break the silence" that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Africans endure for fear of their lives. On that late September evening, Eddy would lose her life, allegedly at the hands of Emmanuel Sankoh, a janitor who Eddy had fired a week before. She was raped and stabbed, and her neck was broken.
