Though convertible hardtops have been around for a while-Lexus SC, Mercedes-Benz SL and SLK, Cadillac XLR, to name a few-the past year has seen a huge influx of less expensive niche models with folding hardtops.
As hardtop convertible variants were introduced on the likes of the Volvo C70, Pontiac G6, Volkswagen Eos, Chrysler Sebring, Mazda MX-5 and BMW 3 Series, makers pushed their benefits: protection from the weather and theft, quieter ride, even better body stiffness.
