Forty-acre intermodal transfer facility planned/or port's Terminal Island.

With construction under way on one on-dock container transfer facility at the Port of Los Angeles, the port has approved $26 million to buy land for a second one.

The new facilities will be in addition to three on-dock transfer terminals at the adjacent Port of Long Beach and the 240-acre Intermodal Container Transfer Facility that Southern Pacific operates four miles inland from the two ports.

The Los Angeles and Long Beach ports are trying to encourage direct ship/rail transfer of containers to eliminate costs, delays and traffic congestion associated with drayage. The two ports …
