Six years ago, Jian-li Yang swung by our offices, to talk about China. He was almost shockingly impressive. He had been a leader of democracy protests at Tiananmen Square. And he had two Ph.D.s: one from Berkeley, in mathematics, and one from Harvard, in political economy. He was a bracing combination of intellectual and human-rights activist.
