Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp. and HealthTrust Inc. plan to merge, creating a $15 billion health care company and Arizona's second largest operator of hospitals.

Only Samaritan Health System, which runs 2,312 beds in a dozen facilities, is larger in the state.

Following the Columbia/HealthTrust merger, the two health care giants will have a presence of four hospitals in Arizona. Louisville, Ky.-based Columbia/HCA owns the 301-bed Healthwest Regional Medical Center in Phoenix and the 140-bed Paradise Valley Hospital. Nashville, Tenn.-based HealthTrust operates the 166-bed El Dorado Hospital and Medical Center and the 130-bed Northwest Hospital in Tucson.
