"It's a holdout from the chrome age,'' says Steve Walters, the Alexandria, Virginia-based owner of this 1976 Mercedes-Benz SLC. He bought the car in 1988, by which time the coupes were simply thought of as used cars. In a way, that still holds true, though there is renewed interest in the SLC. But for many Daimler devotees, then as now, its styling was a bit of stretch.
The SLC's origin lies with the Mercedes 350SL, the ubiquitous two-seat roadster that replaced the W113-class SL in 1972. Engineers took SL parts from Mercedes' new midsize W114 sedan and mated them with engines from the S-Class. Sedan-based coupes had been a popular ...
