May 10--The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board gave the go-ahead Tuesday night to hire Edifice Inc. to build the new Elon Park Elementary School at Ardrey Kell Road.

The $9.6 million construction project is slated to be finished in time for an August 2008 opening. The project includes a separate $300,000 for improvements to Ardrey Kell Road.

Elon Park is desperately needed in the fast-growing Ballantyne area, parents and district officials say. Board members even sought out special funding for the school from the county in order to get Elon Park up and running a year earlier than first planned.
