This issue of Africa Today is unique in focusing on the arts. We were delighted when first contacted by Ed Hawley, the journal's previous Editor, about dedicating an issue to a combined humanities and social science theme. Continued interest and support from Jendayi Frazer has made this issue both a reality and a stimulating collaborative endeavor for us. Our main concern was to bring together a variety of art scholars under the broad umbrella of "Art and Politics." We felt this would best serve the interests of the journal's regular readers while contributing another discipline and methodology for viewing the social arena of politics and cultures in Africa.
