By reducing your intake of foods that contain trans and saturated fats, as well as cholesterol, you may minimize plaque buildup and subsequent hardening of your arteries.
Cholesterol is made by the body, primarily in the liver, and plays an integral role in various processes, such as formation of cell membranes and hormones. However, problems arise when too much cholesterol is produced by the body or added by the foods we eat. "Your body makes all the cholesterol it ever needs. Anything you add from food just contributes to the cholesterol load," explains Andrea Dunn, RD, a registered dietitian at Cleveland Clinic.
