Shane Meadows' new film, This is England, meticulously recreates the summer of 1983 as it follows lonely 12 year-old Shaun as he is befriended by the local gang of skinheads and immersed in the music, fashion and attitudes of their culture. With school over, there is little to do other than hang around, drink cider and smash up the odd derelict building, but for Shaun this new acceptance lifts him out of his isolated life and offers up the male role model he so badly needs, after his father was killed in the Falklands War.
