I take extra-strength acetaminophen every day for my arthritis. I read recently that there will be new warning labels for acetaminophen. Should I stop taking it?

Actually, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is proposing stronger warning labels for all over-the-counter medicines that contain acetaminophen (Tylenol) and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), and naproxen (Aleve).

There are several reasons for the FDA's proposal. Acetaminophen can cause liver damage in high doses (especially for people who drink alcohol), and NSAIDs can cause gastric bleeding and ulcers. About 56,000 Americans visit emergency rooms each year due to acetaminophen…
