A Path Remembered: The Lives of Gerhart & Lucie Niemeyer, by Paul V. Niemeyer (ISI, 420 pp., $40)

PAUSE for one minute (just one minute) to admire the book itself, never mind the text. It is something of sheer beauty, glossy paper cloth-bound, with 200-plus photographs and illustrations. It is as fine an example of modern book craft as I have seen, and it tells the story of Gerhart and Lucie Niemeyer. Gerhart died in 1997 after teaching at Notre Dame for 37 years. He wrote ten books and a thousand essays and reviews. After leaving Germany, he spent, with wife and growing family, time in Spain, then on to Princeton, the State Department, Oglethorpe University, ...
