PAUSE for one minute (just one minute) to admire the book itself, never mind the text. It is something of sheer beauty, glossy paper cloth-bound, with 200-plus photographs and illustrations. It is as fine an example of modern book craft as I have seen, and it tells the story of Gerhart and Lucie Niemeyer. Gerhart died in 1997 after teaching at Notre Dame for 37 years. He wrote ten books and a thousand essays and reviews.
