IN their statements denouncing the Supreme Court for upholding a ban on partial-birth abortion, the leading Democratic presidential contenders never got around to explaining the nature of the procedure they were defending. John Edwards and Barack Obama did not even use the word "abortion" in their statements. So let us supply some missing context: In a partial-birth abortion, a fetus is partially removed from the womb; its skull is punctured; its brains--sorry, its "intracranial contents"--are sucked out; and then the whole body is removed from the womb.
The Constitution cannot plausibly be read to create a right to obtain this procedure, and the Supreme Court ...
