Apr. 27--The Old White Oak of Matthews is alive and well this Arbor Day, and a new white oak is now growing, too. The 129-year-old oak beside Town Hall was injured last year when workers began tearing it down to make way for a sidewalk. An Observer story (Oct. 15, 2006) told how the tree was rescued and nursed back to health. The town of Matthews planted a second white oak last month to celebrate Arbor Day in North Carolina.
