Apr. 26--ALBANY -- Albany High School ranked among the worst in the state in the latest list of graduation rates issued Wednesday, and with just 38 percent of its students getting a diploma, state Education Commissioner Richard Mills called it a "warning sign" that something needs to change.
"The alarm bell could not be ringing any more loudly than it is," Mills said.
Albany's graduation rate is the lowest for mainstream high schools in the state, although city school officials say they believe it's misleading because it doesn't reflect students who took the required Regents exams in August.
"We're not disputing the number, but it's an incomplete data set," said Joe Dragone, the district's assistant superintendent for secondary education.
