Apr. 22--Fourth-grader Summer Thomas was among the students whose pencil-on-paper sketches led to the design of a new playground at her school. However, when the work was all finished, Summer was surprised. "It came out even better than I thought," Summer, 9, said late Wednesday afternoon, looking at the equipment that about 150 volunteers had put together in the six previous hours. "It's great." The volunteers, representing a number of Charlotte-area businesses, spent the day at Piney Grove Elementary School in the fifth annual Playground Build Project, conducted by the Business Volunteer Council, a United Way-supported organization.
