Monday 5 March: Valkenburg vindicated

8am: Market falls sharply again. BAE not too bad, but Billiton, as Cynthia predicted, is hit hard, 8 per cent adrift of Thursday's close and 6 per cent below the level we sold at. Bloody Spirent, of course, the share which I bought at 82p in 2004 and sold at 37p last June for a massive loss, is standing firm at 58p, having lost only 2p during this crisis. Seems I was wrong to buy it, then wrong to sell it. Now, presumably, I am wrong to fret about it.

Eunice calls me out to look at her Clio. "I've just driven back from shopping and it wasn't performing at all well. You don't think it was that tainted fuel do you?"
