RICHMOND, Va. _ Three years ago, Virginia college students ranked security as their top worry, prompting a study of campus safety procedures and approval of new guidelines.
As state officials examined campus after campus, they came away impressed with the police operation at Virginia Tech.
Tech officials now face tough questions over their handling of Monday's tragedy, the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. Some say police should have acted more promptly to alert students as the rampage unfolded in two separate incidents.
And state lawmakers are already considering how and when it should examine Monday's events with an eye toward recommending legislation, one legislator said Tuesday.
