Last December, Danelle Ballengee, a 35-year-old endurance athlete, drove to Moab, Utah, with her 3-year-old mixed breed, Taz, to go for what she thought would be a tranquil two-hour run. She grabbed a bottle of water and, wearing only lightweight clothes, took off. About an hour into her run, she slipped on a patch of ice and went freefalling down a 60-foot cliff. "I felt like I was falling for so long, I didn't know when it would end," she recalls. Taz found a trail and ran down after her.
Danelle landed feet first. Her pelvis, which absorbed the fall, was shattered. "I wasn't in pain initially, so I touched my legs to make sure I wasn't paralyzed," she says. ...
