Apr. 17--The staggering sums of money already raised by the 2008 presidential candidates merit one more plea to salvage public campaign financing.
The primary fund-raising totals so far dwarf any previous election at this early signpost. On the Democratic side: Sen. Barack Obama (D., Ill.), $24.8 million; Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D., N.Y.), $19.1 million; former Sen. John Edwards, $14 million.
Among the Republicans: former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, $20.7 million; former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, $14.7 million; U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona, $13 million.
