This set of books was created to increase the available vocal literature for the beginning middle school and high school student. This they do superbly. Both sets are very well done and very useful. They lead right into Joan Boytim's other series the First Book of Soprano (Alto, Tenor, Bass) Solos.

Each book contains early Broadway songs, art songs in English (a very few in translation from German) and some really fine settings of folk songs. Like all collections that contain art songs, I don't find all of the art songs appealing, although many are. The rest (folk and Broadway) all are very useable.

The accompaniment CD is very well done by pianist Laura Ward. The CD is enhanced with some software (for both Mac and PC) that "allows a computer ...
