Sandra Soderlund has taken on an enormous task in her exploration of keyboard technique in this 522-page volume. Continuing her earlier dissertation research on organ technique, the book is written "to discover how people played keyboard instruments in the past and to present the contexts in which keyboard works were written and performed." Opportunities to explore and perform numerous period keyboard instruments throughout the world inspired her research, and information regarding performance practices on all keyboard instruments is included within this comprehensive volume.
The book opens with a brief history of the keyboard instruments themselves. Chapters on early keyboard music are organized geographically and important figures, such as Bach and Beethoven, receive significant coverage. The 19th-century discussion focuses on the important composers born around 1810: Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin and Liszt, as well as a chapter on the recognized virtuosi of that period. The Russian and French national schools are highlighted separately.
