Apr. 15--On March 16, Alex Vanderkaay was crowned the NCAA champion in the 400-yard individual medley at the national championship meet in Minneapolis. Vanderkaay comes from a family of triumphant swimmers. One of his older brothers, Peter, was a member of the 800-meter freestyle relay team that won gold at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Alex, a junior co-captain at University of Michigan and a Rochester Adams alum, has Olympic aspirations, too. At the NCAA championships, he clocked a time of 3 minutes, 40.89 seconds in the 400 IM, a personal best. He also helped the 12th-ranked Wolverines to a seventh-place finish at the meet.
