Apr. 15--Arcena Todd and her mother spent a year living in a hotel while they struggled to find a home. "I didn't want my friends to know where I was living, that I didn't have a home," Todd, 16, recalls of that experience five years ago. "So I didn't give them my home address, and I couldn't have friends over." Late last month, Todd turned that memory into a first-place speech in the annual "Speaking Your Way Into the Future" oratory contest sponsored by Communities in Schools in Charlotte.
