No matter how scenic the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg looked on television, it was anything but serene for a pair of Brazilians who have been friends since they were 10 years old.
Penske driver Helio Castroneves won the race for the second straight year, leading 95 of 100 laps. Andretti Green Racing's Tony Kanaan was the fastest driver in qualifying, the fastest in morning practice and the driver who made the biggest gains through the 18-car field during the race, on his way to third place. Yet Kanaan didn't congratulate Castroneves, and Castroneves didn't look for his friend after the race, either. It seems they're fighting, both on and off the track.
The tale began years ago with two drivers who shared goals, dreams and teams. They drove for the same Formula Atlantic team and have had success in CART and the Indy Racing League: Castroneves won a pair of Indianapolis 500s (2001 and 2002); Kanaan won the 2004 IRL championship.
Tension broke out at last year's season-ending race at Chicagoland Speedway. Castroneves was battling Penske teammate Sam Hornish Jr. for his first IRL championship, a title he ended up losing. ...
