Citroen driver Sebastien Loeb took his 31st career win during Rally Portugal, round five of the World Rally Championship. The win should have moved Loeb to within two points of Ford driver and championship leader Marcus Gronholm, but instead, a rules violation by six Ford Focus runners handed Loeb a one-point lead. Inspectors found the Fords were using the wrong specification of rear side-window glass and issued each car a five-minute penalty. The penalties hit Gronholm hard, dropping him from second place to fourth, and Mikko Hirvonen went from third to fifth. Subaru's Petter Solberg moved up to second, and Citroen's Dani Sordo moved into third.
Before the results shuffling, Gronholm took an early advantage on day one, but Loeb moved ahead at day's end and stretched his advantage in rain on day two. "I chose soft tires, but I'm slightly surprised that Marcus didn't make the same decision,'' Loeb said. "It was already raining before we left the service park.''
