More questions than answers
' book review
This is a challenging time to work as an archivist. The ethical issues that surround the sensitive areas of copyright, censorship and privacy are legion.
In the US, for example, the passing of the Patriot Act, which allows federal agents access to certain archives without reference to a judge, has forced archivists to think about whether their obligations to the state and national security override their obligations to keep private data private.
In the UK, the Terrorism Act and Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act have provoked similar ethical dilemmas. And the global spread of electronic records raises some thorny questions about data preservation and access.
