PERSONAL FINANCE : Raising credit score can save you money.

Apr. 11--Troubles in the subprime mortgage industry in recent months have spotlighted the importance of credit scores. Subprime borrowers, those with a credit score of 620 or lower, hit record highs in late payments and home foreclosures in the fourth quarter of 2006, the Mortgage Bankers Association said in March. "With all these delinquencies and now foreclosures that are happening, the subprime market is really tightening up on their underwriting requirements," said Bobby Allison, vice president for American Home Mortgage in Chattanooga. On the upside, subprime lenders may become more careful to avoid transactions that look like predatory lending ; however, it may also become difficult for those with less-than-perfect credit to get financed for a mortgage.
