The Splendid Splinter.(Lotus Eclat and Lotus Elite automobiles of the 1970's)

Those who know French might call the Lotus Eclat the "Splinter'' Lotus. One meaning for eclat is "splinter of wood.'' Certainly, the basic design of the Eclat splintered the Lotus mold, as Colin Chapman uncharacteristically sought to provide a dash of practicality in a sporty, affordable four-seater.
The Eclat's origins lie in the Lotus Elite II. Conceived as an agile front-engined GT for the enthusiast who had people and things to haul, the Elite II would replace the Elan and give Lotus a new position in the market.
