For open-wheel racing fans hoping to see a winter reconciliation between the Champ Car World Series and the Indy Racing League: Didn't happen. Not even discussed.
Those convinced that open-wheel racing can thrive only under one banner may take solace in seeing that neither Champ Car nor the IRL had a very strong off-season. Of the two, Champ Car's nearly five months of downtime was more eventful, with good news, bad news and news not yet classified.
At the top of the list is a new car. Gone for good is the workhorse Lola, now relegated to test car, show car and eventually fern planter. The Lola is replaced by the new-from-the-ground-up Panoz DP01, with an equally new pneumatic-actuated paddle-shift transmission. Retained, and slightly updated, is the 2.65-liter, 750-hp turbocharged Cosworth V8, along with the "push to pass'' feature that allows for 60 seconds (total per race) of boosted horsepower. Drivers say that if you were fast in the Lola, you'll be fast in the Panoz-handling and performance are similar.
Two other substantial changes are revealed in the series name change for 2007. Last year, it was Bridgestone Presents the Champ Car Word Series Powered by Ford. Now, it's the Champ Car World Series.
