Robert E. "Pete'' Petersen, a car culture pioneer and a man whose enthusiasm and business sense led to the founding of the Specialty Equipment Market Association, the National Hot Rod Association, Hot Rod and Motor Trend magazines and the Los Angeles automotive museum that bears his name, died March 23 of neuroendocrine cancer.
